Myths, Mysteries and Minefields

Valli Morrison, Rix & Kay

Many employers go along with general beliefs regarding employment law because they believe what they are doing is correct, and it protects them from Employment Tribunal claims.

Unfortunately this is not always the case! This seminar will go through some of those myths and misunderstandings and will clarify exactly what the law states. Examples being: you can dismiss someone with no comeback during probationary period, you have to have a written contract of employment, you have to consult for 30 days when dealing with redundancies, you cannot ask about child care arrangements during an interview and much more.

The seminar will also look at minefields such as long term sickness, swine flu, redundancies and flexible working requests and will simplify these procedures.

Peter & Sue Ratcliffee, B Smart Training

Conflict management training is required in certain roles to help staff to safely and effectively manage aggressive and challenging behaviour.

Depending on the risks faced this will involve spotting signs of frustration and anger and allowing individuals to indentify the least aversive option to either extract themselves or defuse and calm situations. It may be necessary that further training is required for physical interventions in high risk situations which follow-on from conflict management.

This conflict management training teaches individuals to recognise the signs that may indicate a situation is going to escalate, and teaches some simple techniques for defusing anger and aggression. It will also give individuals the confidence to deal with challenging behaviours in a way that is safe and professional for your staff and customers alike.
